On Saturday there was a baby shower to celebrate baby Hales and to offer Emily any motherly advice.
The food was delicious and the decorations were lovely.
A game was played trying to match sisters in the branch to their baby pictures....
It wasn't as easy as you would think...

Stake Relief Society Conference

On Saturday October 8th the stake had a wonderful Relief Society Conference. Different classes were offered throughout the morning followed by a wonderful lunch complete with soups and PUMPKIN PIE!
The Stake Relief Society Presidency also announced the launching of a new website
www.owegosisters.com
This website is to be used as a source to bring together the sisters in the stake. Geographically speaking we are not close as other stakes of densely populated LDS members, but this website is to bring us together and to show our similarities. On the website sisters can post ideas for activities, service projects, share recipes, and even do babysitting swaps.

Pumpkins and Processors

If you have ever wanted to feel like you were better than anyone else at the Thanksgiving party, then here is your chance.

November 16 at 6pm we are getting together at the church to make pumpkin pies. From scratch. Not your mother's scratch, your great-grandmother's scratch. It's gonna be awesome.

We will be making pie crusts as well. So in the end you will go home with processed pumpkin and a pie crust and some recipes. What you add at home to make it delicious is up to you.

We are low on food processors so if you can bring one and a pot for your pumpkin that would be most helpful.

We hope to see you and your friends there!

So, first up: Lauren Merkley. Our fearless leader has most graciously answered our super cool questionnaire. So read on and be amazed.

1. Where are you from?

Born and raised in Evanston, IL, just north of Chicago.

2. What is your birthday?

August 16.

3. Have you served a mission? If yes, where and what language?

Yes, I served in the Madagascar Antananarivo mission, French speaking. I also served 5 months (visa-waiting) in the Tucson Arizona mission.

4. What brings you to Ithaca?

Originally school brought me, but a sweet job at Cornell in development brought me back three years after I graduated.

5. What do you like about Ithaca? Why?

I like almost everything about Ithaca: that Crocs are considered more-than-acceptable shoes, that you can buy unpasteurized apple cider straight from the press, the nexus of cosmopolitan and small-town-America, the annual parade featuring a chainsaw chorus, the beauty of the lake – I could go on and on. In fact, I would be hard-pressed to list things I don’t like about Ithaca.

6. What is your favorite place to eat in Ithaca?

This is a hard one. It might be a toss-up between Wegman’s and the Farmer’s Marke, specifically the Cambodian food stall and brick-oven pizza stall. They make a mean monkey-bread.

7. Do you like sweet or salty treats?

Both. Fries in the Frosty, chocolate on pretzels, that kind of thing.

8. What is your favorite band/artist(s)?

Some good stand-by favorites are Joni Mitchell and Paul Simon. In the New World, I’m a sucker for the Arcade Fire, Sufjan Stevens and Avett Brothers.

9. What is your favorite movie?

I try to base most of my life decisions on the cinematic classic “Clueless.”

10. Favorite book?

To The Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf, hands down. Close second: Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner. Third: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

11. Favorite day of the week? Why?

Friday. For obvious reasons.

12. What do you do when you have spare time?

Listen relentlessly to podcasts, pretend to train for triathlons and read everything I can get my hands on.

13. Who do you admire?

Probably my very wise father above all. I refer to him as Confucius.

14. What is the kindest thing anyone has done for you?

Its not a huge thing, but my non-member roommates in Washington, DC threw me a farewell/bon voyage bbq for me before I left on my mission. They invited all of my LDS, non-LDS and work friends to wish me well on my mission – something they didn’t quite understand but fully supported.

15 What is one thing people in the branch don’t know about you?

I am borderline obsessed with peanuts.

The Stake Relief Society Service Day on Saturday May 1st at the New Hope Women's Shelter in Owego was a huge success! There was awesome representation from the branch and also a great turn out from the rest of the wards in the stake. The stake was able to collect an astounding number of items to donate to the shelter, we had the administration office hallway filled with items donated! Thank you to everyone that helped with our Relief Society Meeting Service activity of putting together hygiene kits and tying blankets- these were all donated on Saturday as well.

People contributed to the service day in various capacities: working on quilts at the Stake Center, sorting items at the shelter's administration offices, cleaning/yard work at the shelter and also painting one of the windows at the admin. offices. If you have any pictures of the service day, please send them to christy.clegg@gmail.com so we can add them to the blog.

Our very own Mindi Martin designed a painting for a window at the admin. offices and it was awesome! Great job Mindi!!

Recipe Exchange!!

The Relief Society will be hosting an end-of-the-year celebration Recipe Exchange on Tuesday May 11th at 7pm at the church!

Please e-mail a recipe of your choice (dessert, appetizer, main course) to Hillary Jones by Tuesday May 4th at llary523@hotmail.com

Hillary will be compiling an electronic PDF cookbook to send to everyone along with photos from the activity.

On Tuesday May 11th, bring one copy of your recipe to place in front of your dish.

You will get to taste test all of the yummy dishes while celebrating the last year, saying our goodbyes and having fun!

Our talented Laura Wilks will be performing in Scranton on Saturday October 24th...see below.

The Robert Dale Chorale's Fall Concert will be presented on Saturday, October 24 at 7:30pm at Elm Park Methodist Church in Scranton and on Sunday, October 25 at 3:00pm at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Wilkes-Barre. The concert will feature baritone soloist, Charles Unice and organist, Mark Laubach, in Vaughn Williams' masterpiece, "Five Mystical Songs." The chorale will also be performing selections from composers William Hawley, David Dickau, Gustav Holst, and an original piece by our conductor, Steven Thomas. The concert will offer a blend of timeless poetry and music. Admission is $15 adults, $12 seniors and WVIA members, $7 students. Children under 12 are free when accompanied by a parent. Stake Women's Conference!

This year's Stake Women's Conference was awesome! Every year women say it is so good and now, I can say I have experienced once again the excellence that is our stake- and our very own branch. There was a GREAT turn out from the branch! It is so unfortunate that Fall Break conflicted with this event and some of you are out of town, but great news...next year I hear it will NOT be planned on the same weekend as Fall Break.

Lauren was the keynote speaker and spoke about "Choosing the Better Part". Incredibly uplifting, articulate and right on. Thank you Lauren!

Amy Sonntag taught a much anticipated class on Intimacy, which was so incredibly informative. Amy was so fantastic we want her to teach an "Additional Relief Society Meeting". Great Job Amy!

Eliza Brown and her mother, Rhoda, taught an amazing cooking class. I can totally picture the two of them doing an incredibly successful cooking show. Or creating a cookbook ala Julia Child. In under 50 minutes, Eliza and Rhoda showed us how to make yummy no-knead bread, porkchops, homemade mayonnaise & chocolate mousse. Yes, all of this in under 50 minutes. The most amazing part is how awesome it all tasted. I also think we need this dynamic duo to do an "Additional Relief Society Meeting" for us....AMAZING.

Just a reminder that tomorrow is the Stake Women's Conference in Owego from 9:30am-3:00pm with lunch being provided in between classes.

Each year the women that attend say that it is fantastic and we hope that if you are in town you will join us tomorrow.

The Cornell Branch is representing at the Conference- Lauren Merkley will be the keynote speaker & Amy Sonntag will be teaching one of the classes. Kudos to Jen Sanders who is on the Stake Relief Society Presidency and was active in organizing and planning this event.

A group will be carpooling to Owego tomorrow and if you are interested in carpooling please contact Lauren Merkley.

On Holy Ground: Examining the spiritual roles we play in the plan of happiness.

Finding Joy in a Crazy World: As we get busier and our lives get crazier, we can pause and find joy all around us, in small and simple things.

A Grand Time: Class time will be spent in discussing the roles, responsibilities, and relationships of grandparents and grandchildren with opportunities for sharing.

Music Can Soothe or Enliven: Music can help bring peace to our souls or can awaken feelings of happiness.

No Knead Bread: The best ever, easy, simple, crusty artisanal bread, mousse, mayonnaise, tenderloin and more for so much less time and money than you might guess. We'll do all this in under an hour.

Boot Camp: Discuss together a few ideas of what we can do now to help us be better prepared for the future.

Intimacy: Learn what one can do to help improve relationships, thus creating happier lives.

Life-Long Learning: The more we learn, the more we know that there is so much more out there to know. Continued learning can bring great feelings of accomplishment and success to our lives.
